A bakery's day starts before its customers wake up. Bread, pav and buns leave the oven in the dark, and the trays have to reach shops, tea stalls and offices before breakfast. A tiffin service runs the same race a few hours later: dabbas packed, labelled and handed over before lunch.
Both jobs have the same shape. The food is ready at one moment and wanted at another, the load is bulky but not heavy, and it has to arrive clean, upright and on time. This post is a planning guide for that shape of work.
Start with the clock, not the vehicle
Write down two times: when the food is ready to leave, and when the last drop has to be done. The gap between them is your delivery window, and everything else follows from it.
- A bakery might have the trays ready at 5:30 and need the last shop done by 7:30.
- A tiffin kitchen might pack from 11:00 and need every office reached by 13:00.
- A cloud kitchen might send several small waves through the evening.
Then list the stops in that window, in the order you would drive them. If the window is short and the stops are many, you need either more trips per vehicle or more vehicles, whatever you drive.
Plan by weight, check by size
Food runs feel light, but trays, dabbas and crates add up. Weigh a full tray or a full crate of tiffins once, then multiply. That gives you kilograms per trip, and kilograms decide which vehicle fits.
CROC EV is rated for 80 kg, with a 25% overload allowance that takes it to 100 kg. Its box holds 380 litres. For most bakery and tiffin loads the weight limit comes before the space limit, so plan the trip by kilograms. Then check that your own trays, crates or insulated bags fit the box. Send us their sizes and we will check them against the box with you.
A closed box is a food-safety decision
Food travels best covered, upright and away from dust and rain. A lockable box in front of the driver keeps the load enclosed and in sight, and once it is locked, nobody can lift a tray from it at a stop. Check the food-safety rules that apply to your business with your local authority.
Keep it level, keep it clean
Trays slide and tiffins tip. A few habits keep the food looking the way it left the kitchen:
- Load the heaviest trays or crates at the bottom and towards the back of the box.
- Use trays and crates that stack and lock into each other, and fill gaps so nothing slides.
- Keep hot and cold apart: an insulated bag for hot tiffins, a separate one for anything chilled.
- Wipe the box out at the end of each day, and keep a liner you can lift out and wash.
- Lock the box at every stop, even a short one.

Charge between the rushes
Bakery and tiffin work comes in rushes with quiet hours in between, which suits charging. CROC EV's 2 kWh battery is removable and charges from an ordinary 5 A socket in about 2 hours 30 minutes, with the 750 W charger it comes with. One battery covers 40 km, and a second battery takes the day to 80 km.
A simple plan: charge overnight for the morning run, then charge again in the gap after the morning run, or swap to the second battery. Keep a few kilometres in reserve for the detour you did not plan.
The numbers for a food run
- Payload
- 80 kg, 100 kg with overload allowance
- Cargo box
- 380 litres, lockable, FRP with steel reinforcement
- Range
- 40 km on one battery, 80 km with two
- Charging
- About 2 h 30 min on a 5 A socket, 750 W charger
- Top speed
- 25 km/h
- Special bodies
- Vending bodies built to order on the same chassis
Selling, not only delivering
Some bakeries and kitchens want to sell from the vehicle as well as deliver with it: a morning bread round, a snack counter outside an office park. That needs a vending body rather than a closed box, and vending bodies are built to order on the same chassis. Tell us what you sell and how you serve it.
